The activity and job logs will contain a message reporting a problem that will begin with E (Error) or AE (Agent Error) and then a number.

But that is just a general classification for an error, look to the end of the message for the EC= to find the specific event being reported.

That Error Code is likely to come either from the OS or the agent. At the target system there is a Universal Agent that makes the connection to the ARCserve Server. There are also specific data agents such as the Client Agent, SQL and Exchange DB Agents that do the actual read of the data.

So far you have the general E or AE error code and the specific EC code providing a direction, what next?

3 Steps total

Step 1: Look for consistency.

Pdf xchange viewer 2.5 build 315 serial key. The Job Log is nice because errors are all listed right at the bottom so they are real easy to find, but it lacks details.

Check the Activity log to see if the ARCserve server completes the initial connection to the agent, and if so for how long until the failure happens, and to see if it is consistent.

Step 2: At the target system.

Each agent maintains its own log.

The ntagent log is a record of the upper level activity, connecting, start, stopping a job, things like that. The logs in the Log subdirectory contain the detailed record of the activity for each backup and restore session, and each job has its own log.

For both debug setting the Universal Client Agent Service must be restarted for it to take effect.

Diagnostic Wizard
Is installed by default.
Start > Programs > CA > ARCserve Backup > Diagnostic Wizard

It can collect System Information, Client Agent logs and data, CA Licensing information, Registry, ARCserve Alert, Network Diagnostic Information, and Installation information. Each item can be selected or deselected for inclusion.

The data is saved to a .caz file which can be viewed via the Wizard or extracted via cazipxp.exe. The wizard is an easy way to collect this information if opening an issue with CA Support.

If you are doing the troubleshooting yourself then it is easier to view this data via the OS Server Manager and Sys Info Report
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

Depending on the direction the data points other things can be used such as Network Monitor. Set these up and then run a test job and check the logs for errors or a lack of.

Step 3: Update, update, update

I have no idea why, but I've seen it again and again. Everything is running just fine and then boom! it breaks and just will not run correctly again until half dozen things have been updated.

Don't even bother considering if it is or not related to the problem just accept it as regular routine and check for updates for all the likely suspects. NIC driver and firmware updates, OS updates, system updates (Dell, HP, IBM, or whoever made the system), application updates (security, firewall, anything works with the file system).

Sure go ahead and look for the quick fix, but make it just that and nothing more. After that take the time and be thorough, and document any changes made.

I look at it this way, you need a tool and buy the expensive one but you are forever happy you did because every time you pick it up it just feels right in your hand and it always does the job right and never slips.
